The highly anticipated American Classic will feature junior and senior gymnasts competing at the elite level, as well as the Hopes Classic with 11-14 year-old gymnasts who intend to be elite one day.

Illinois is coming off a season where the Fighting Illini finished fourth at the Champaign regional. The squad had a good meet on both uneven bars and balance beam, but couldn't break the 9.850 mark on either floor or vault. Illinois will have a new face at the helm with Nadalie Walsh taking over for Kim Landrus. Former U.S. elite and NCAA star Ashley Priess-Johnston was hired this summer as an assistant. Lizzy Leduc had a stellar sophomore season and finished the season ranked in the top-25 on both beam and floor.

Six berths to the NCAA Championships are on the line this weekend for 18 teams at the Champaign, Fayetteville, and Seattle regionals. The top two teams from each of Saturday's regionals will advance to the first NCAA semifinals session on April 14 in St. Louis. UCLA, Utah, and Oklahoma--the top three seeds in these regionals--will likely be battling it out to advance to the Super Six. The NCAA Championships could also set up the first of two head-to-head competitions for former U.S. elites Maggie Nichols of Oklahoma and MyKayla Skinner of Utah, whose teams did not face off this season.

The Illinois men's and women's gymnastics teams put on a great show at their annual Orange and Blue Exhibition on Sunday, Dec. 4. Both teams combined to form two squads, Orange and Blue, for some friendly competition. Together, the men's and women's gymnasts performed entertaining routines to show fans what's in store for the upcoming season.

The championships will be split up into two sessions, where four teams will compete in the morning, and six in the evening. Twenty-nine years have passed since the No. 17 Illinois Fighting Illini last defeated the No. 3 Michigan Wolverines. This Friday, the Illini look to use their home-field advantage to end the Wolverines’ streak. After only losing three routines and finishing second to Michigan at last year’s Big Ten Championships, this may be the year the streak ends.

During Illinois's Senior Day, the Fighting Illini defeated the Lindenwood Lions by scoring a 197.100, the highest team total any Illinois women's gymnastics team has produced. Although the Lions lost the meet, it was still a great meet for them as they broke their team score record with a 194.450.

Illinois head coach and 2008 Olympic medalist Justin Spring has plans to revolutionize NCAA men's gymnastics. He'll be testing out a new meet format in their home meet tonight with Minnesota. The plan is designed to make men's NCAA competitions more fan-friendly and marketable.
