PREVIEW: Big 10 Championships



The 2014 Big Ten Women’s Gymnastics Championships will be held Saturday at Rec Hall on the Penn State campus in University Park, Pa. The eight conference teams will compete in one of two sessions, and the team with the highest score, regardless of the session, will win the Big Ten Championship.

#8 Michigan

: Joanna Sampson, Nicole Artz, Natalie Beilstein 

Notes:
Despite being the top ranked team in the conference, the Michigan Wolverines will compete in the afternoon session, by virtue of their disappointing 3rd place finish at last weekend’s Big 10 quad meet. Michigan will aim to score the championship winning high score during the afternoon session and apply pressure to the remaining teams in the evening session.  The Wolverines are looking to become the first team to win the Big 10 Championships out of the afternoon session. Joanna Sampson will also be aiming to post a personal AA score that can hold up against the evening session to vie for the AA title. Michigan will begin the meet on vault in the afternoon session.

 

#9 Nebraska

Notes:
The Nebraska Cornhuskers will be looking to defend their Big 10 championship title this weekend. Nebraska is shooting for their fourth straight championship title including two wins of the Big 12 conference, and last season in the Big 10. Nebraska took home a share of the regular season title last weekend by placing first in their quad meet. The Cornhuskers qualified to the evening session and will begin the meet on bars.

 

#13 Illinois

Gymnasts to watch: Amber See, Sunny Kato

Notes
Illinois placed second last weekend at their Big 10 quad meet qualifying them to the evening session for the first time in program history. The Fighting Illini are the highest ranked beam team in the Big 10 and will look to that event to help them capture their first title since 1990. Illinois will start on vault in the evening session. 

 

#15 Penn State

Notes:
The Penn State Nittany Lions will be host to this year’s Big 10 championships. After placing second at last weekend’s Big 10 quad meet, Penn State has qualified to the evening session and will look to utilize home field advantage as they contend for the title. Penn State will begin the meet on floor in the evening session.

#16 Minnesota

Notes:
The Minnesota Gophers will enter this weekend’s Big 10 Championships fresh off clinching a share of the Big 10 regular-season title. A quad-meet win at Michigan gave Minnesota a share of its second-straight league championship. Minnesota qualified to the evening session and will begin the meet on beam.

#24 Ohio State

Notes:
The Ohio State Buckeyes placed fourth last weekend at their Big 10 quad meet, qualifying them to the afternoon session. Ohio State will need their season best performance to contend for the championship title. Ohio State will begin the meet on beam in the afternoon session
