Leanne Wong Commits To University Of Florida

Two-time U.S. Senior National Team member Leanne Wong, an elite from Great American Gymnastic Express (GAGE), announced her commitment to the University of Florida. Her signing ends months of gymternet guessing and giddiness. Known for her graceful extension, clean lines, and competitive consistency, Wong made it official November 14, 2020, through her Instagram account. 

Wong, coached by Al Fong and Armine Barutyan, had a spectacular 2019 season beginning in March when she won the American Cup. In July and August, she continued her laser focus steadiness, competing in the U.S. Classics, Pan American Games, and the U.S. Championships within weeks. At the Pan American Games, she won team gold and silver on the uneven bars. At the 2019 U.S. National Championships, Wong won bronze on the balance beam. 

In March of this year, Wong was selected to compete at the City of Jesolo Trophy. However, the U.S. declined to send a team due to COVID-19. Despite the long pause in meets, she has continued to upgrade her skills. She recently debuted a “Ray” uneven bar skill, a double-twisting double layout dismount named after U.S. gymnast Elise Ray. 

Florida coach Jenny Rolands said, “Both Leanne's power and grace will be an incredible addition for both the Gators and NCAA gymnastics. We look forward to seeing her dreams and goals of becoming an NCAA champion and doctor come to fruition.”

Wong will join a heavily decorated and accomplished freshman class, including recent commit Sloan Blakely, along with Morgan Hurd and Riley McCusker, signees from last November.
