China Tops Day 1 Of Gymnastics Worlds Qualifications
China and France's Melanie de Jesus dos Santos lead the team and all-around, respectively, after Day 1 of the 2019 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.
The 2019 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships began today with the first six women's subdivisions. With hundreds of routines, there's a lot of gymnastics to catch up on, but here are three of the top headlines from day one.
China Starts Strong
The best is for last was certainly the case today as China competed in the final subdivision and finished No. 1 team standings with a score of 169.161. China competed in Olympic order and began on vault, counting three strong vaults scoring in the 14.000 range.
They carried that momentum to uneven bars. All four gymnasts in the bars lineup scored in the 14.000 range, led by Liu Tingting's 14.766. Tang Xijing had a fall on beam, but the rest of the lineup had good routines in the 14.000 range to keep them on top. Floor wasn't as strong for China, earning just one score in the 13.000 range. But three strong events were enough to put them in a good position heading into team finals.
Melanie de Jesus dos Santos Proves Herself An All-Around Contender
A rising all-around gymnast in recent years and the reigning European all-around champion, de Jesus dos Santos leads the all-around standings with a solid score of 56.782. Her competition began on floor, where she competed a good routine for a 13.966, a score that should contend for floor finals. Her 13.966 is currently the top score on floor.
Next were vault and uneven bars, which were also strong events. De Jesus dos Santos scored a 14.600 on both, one of her highest scores on either apparatus this year. Last was beam, where she earned a solid 13.616. Her all-around performance helped put Team France in an excellent position to move on to team finals. France currently sits in second in the team qualifications.
Nina Derwael Soars & Scores Big On Uneven Bars
The reigning world uneven bars champion is ready to defend her title with her upgraded routine that is already the one to beat. Highlighted by a Nabieva and an Ezhova to straddle back to Pak salto to van Leeuwen, the Belgian earned a huge 15.141 for her routine.
