France, Canada, Great Britain, Romania, Brazil - Training Day 3 Recap
Here’s what you need to know about training day 3 from team France, Canada, Great Britain, Romania, and Brazil.
France
The French hit the gym this morning, showing difficulty on beam with a double-pike dismount from Lorette Charpy and a killer set from Carolann Heduit. She mounted loso (like several other French gymnasts today), side aerial to loso, and a roundoff back handspring to a triple-full!
Charpy looked great on bars with her toe-½ stalder to Shaposh-½, a big piked Jaeger, and a stalder Tkatchev, just to name a few of her bar tricks.
Juniors Celia Serber and Claire Pontlevoy were less refined form-wise, but Pontlevoy showed a nearly laid-out Tkatchev and Serber dismounted with a full-twisting double layout.
We saw a floor routine from Heduit with a tucked ½-in, ½-out, Arabian double tuck, a whip to triple full, and a double pike. So you'll want to watch her in competition.
Canada
We saw Canada on bars, vault, and floor today. Mia St. Pierre showed a bar routine with her sky-high toe-on Tkatchev. Quinn Skrupa trained her stalder-full through to ½-in front-out.
On vault we saw Laurie-Lou Vezina’s Yurchenko full-on, pike off, which landed low but is still unique and difficult.
The juniors from Great Britain focused on bars and beam today.
On bars, we saw some combos, transitions and a tucked full-out from Annie Young. Phoebe Jakubczyk showed clean pirouettes, and Ondine Achampong brought the technique to the table with pencil-straight handstands and great stalder and inbar work. She also has a big Tkatchev and tucked full-out dismount.
Beam is where it’s at for GB. Young will definitely go for a medal with her stellar beam set. She catches the eye with a back-dive mount and triple series. Her choreography is mature and mesmerizing.
Jakubczyk also trained a solid beam set today with a punch front and a big switch leap to switch half series.
Romania
On vault, we saw a clean Y-Full from Nica Ivanus. Denisa Golgata showed a big Y-2/1 with just a little pike, and Ana Maria Ocolisan trained a solid Y-Full.
Golgata showed a beam set with a big handspring step-out to back-pike and a straight jump to punch-front. Her leap connection shows potential—split leap to switch leap to switch side.
Veteran Ocolisan also trained beam today. She kept things on the lighter side, timer-ing her flight and dismount, but she showed some pretty leap combos (switch leap to split ring, switch ring) and a solid switch half.
Ana Maria Puiu leads the Romanian seniors on bars with strong handstand and pirouetting work. Today, she trained a bar set that mounted with a big Gienger, a stalder full that stayed right on top of the bar, and an airborne Pak.
The Romanian juniors showed some potential on bars today. Antonia Duta showed an aggressive swing that could amount to a big routine in the future. She really works the bar, snaps straight to handstand and pirouettes quickly and effortlessly. Not a ton of difficulty yet, but one to watch.
Silvia Sfiringu also showed a bar set with a piked Jaeger, Pak, and a double tuck. She’s got some knee form and handstand work to clean up, but the junior is putting together some combinations and transitions that we’ll watch in the future.
On floor, Puiu trained a routine with a tucked full-in, 2.5 punch front tuck, and dismounted a double tuck. Not a ton of D-vaule, but she showed nice leap extension.
Sfiringu showed promise on floor, starting her routine with a pretty double leg-hold turn, and mounting with a piked full-in. She also twists like nobody’s business with a front double full and ends her routine with a triple.
Duta really has her own unique style of choreography. It’s not sharp and robotic like we see a lot in elite gymnastics, but she looks like she’s having fun and actually dancing—there’s even some sass to her steps. She showed a tucked full-in, 2.5 to punch front tuck, double pike, and double tuck.
Brazil
Brazil hit bars and beam this morning. Jade Barbosa showed a very strong bar routine with a big stalder Tkatchev to Pak, Maloney to bail, toe-full to Tkatchev, and a pretty double lay.
Brazil is not afraid of amplitude on beam, and it showed in today’s training.
Saraiva attacked her set, truly tumbling through her roundoff layout and handspring step-out loso - loso like she’s on floor. Her punch front is almost impossibly high. Saraiva is bringing fierce competition to Jesolo and she’s out for medals.
Barbosa also showed a gorgeous roundoff layout in a partial beam set today along with some real amplitude in her leaps and jumps (her wolf jump full and straddle full are almost as high as her shoulders).
We saw Carolyne Pedro in Jesolo last year. Today, she showed some improvement in her beam leaps and jumps, and her double tuck is cleaner and higher than the one she competed in 2017.
Luiza Domingues will make her senior debut in competition tomorrow and she’ll surely add to Brazil’s beam arsenal. She mounts with a front tuck and shows a solid punch front, a flighty handspring step-out loso. She’ll be fun to watch in competition as she turns beam into a performance with artistry for days in her choreography.
