LA Coliseum, Opening Ceremony for the 1984 Olympics

The U.S. Olympic Committee has named Los Angeles as the official U.S. bidder for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, city officials announced today. Boston was originally named the official bidder but the city withdrew their bid due to local opposition.

Los Angeles boasts a successful history of hosting the Games in 1932 and 1984, with 1984 being particularly momentous for U.S. gymnastics. 

In 1932, Italy won the men's team competition and Romeo Neri of Italy won the men's individual all-around competition. Women's gymnastics did not become an Olympic sport until 1952.

In 1984, Romania won the women's team competition, with USA coming in second. Mary Lou Retton took the individual all-around gold after her historic perfect 10s on floor and vault. On the men's side, USA won the team gold and Koji Gushiken of Japan took the individual all-around gold.

Currently, Paris, Rome, Budapest, and Hamburg have also filed bids.

The 2024 host city will be announced September 15th, 2017 in Lima, Peru, following a vote from the International Olympic Committee.
