Oklahoma Dominates and Illinois Delivers in Minneapolis


The #2 nationally ranked University of Oklahoma was all business today at the 2014 Minneapolis NCAA Regional Championships. The Sooners hit a 197.725 to top second place Illinois by over a point and easily advance to the 2014 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships. 

The University of Illinois, the meet's second seed, clinched the second qualifing spot and will join the Sooners at Nationals in Birmingham. The Illini impressed on uneven bars with a series of stuck dismounts and a 9.925 for Sunny Kato. In the final rotation, they were faced with the tough task of ending on beam, but each gymnast in their lineup delivered hit routines lead by a 9.90 for Sarah Fielder. 

Oklahoma got off to a slow but steady start on uneven bars with a 49.175 on bars and continued to build their scores as the meet progressed. Haley Scaman and Lara Albright led the team to a 49.45 on floor with 9.90's each. Finally, in the last rotation, the Sooners put on a stickfest to break the OU program record on vault with a monster 49.70 team score! Madison Mooring and Kara Lovan led off for a 9.90's. Scaman and Keeley Kmieciak both stuck for 9.950's while Maile'ana Kanewa highlighted the rotation with a 9.975.

The host team of Minnesota entered the competition as the third seed and had high hopes of pulling an upset at home. However, they dug themselves into a hole with a low 48.70 on bars. They rallied back with a respectable 49.30 on floor anchored by a 9.95 for sophomore star Lindsay Mable, but it wasn't enough to overtake the Illini who delivered hit beam routines in the final rotation. Mable was honored with the meet's all around title and will advance as an individual qualifier to the NCAA Championships.
