The #4 Oklahoma Sooners edged the #11 Georgia Gymdogs today in the highly anticipated season opening match-up in Athens .

This was the first meet for Georgia under the helm of Danna Durante and the first meet in over twenty years without Jay Clark on the sidelines. Clark is now the Associate Head coach at LSU. Oklahoma will compete this season without senior All America Kayla Nowak who recently suffered a very serious back injury during training.


This meet was very close for the first three rotations with Georgia ahead by .125 going into to the final event. The Gym Dogs were forced to compete today without senior Noel Couch who is out with a hand injury. Georgia started out very strong on the vault for a team total of 49.3. The rotation was capped off by a 9.925 from Cat Hires.

The trend continued for Georgia on the Uneven Bars with three scores over a 9.8 from Chelsea Davis, Lindsey Cheek and Hires for a 49.150. The Gym Dogs struggled on floor exercise with landing errors and falls and had to count three low scores from Hires, Brandie Jay, and Sarah Persinger as the Gym Dogs only scored a combined 48 on the event. 

The Sooners had not won on the road in a season opener since 2001. OU had to close out the meet on the treacherous balance beam, but Oklahoma Coach K.J. Kindler knew that "It's not over until that last beam routine was over." The Sooners were solid on the beam and did not score below a 9.8, led by a 9.875 performance by all around champion Taylor Spears. The team's 49.2 on beam was more than enough to overtake the Gym Dogs and earned the Sooners their first victory in Athens.
